Director, Water and Wastewater Engineering

Job Description

Are you a strong leader and technical expert in water and wastewater engineering? Are you looking for an opportunity to lead and grow our team? We are seeking a Director of Water and Wastewater Engineering ready to make an immediate impact. The team’s projects are focused on water distribution, wastewater collection, treatment plant operations, treatment of drinking water, wastewater management.

Responsibilities of the position include managing and overseeing all teams and projects in the department, ensuring that work is executed on time, on budget, and delivering to client requirements aligned with SSM policies and procedures. The Director will assist with and lead project execution and train, mentor, develop and supervise engineering staff, providing work assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff. In addition, the Director will assist in identifying new opportunities and developing new business with current and prospective clients and marketing of the firm’s capabilities, participate in proposal development, and serve as liaison with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability and track record at profitably managing and building business
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) License
    Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • M.S. or MBA degree is beneficial
  • Ten + years of increasingly responsible project experience in the study, design, and construction administration and inspection of water, wastewater, reclaimed water, and/or stormwater facilities and infrastructure (treatment plants, pipelines, force mains, pump stations)
  • Five + recent years of experience with progressive responsibilities in business development in the municipal and water utility markets
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) for technical and non-technical audiences.

The Vice President, Water and Wastewater Engineering and Operations is responsible for leading the strategic and tactical implementation of the division. Responsibilities include setting the strategy and overseeing the development of SSM’s business plan to ensure profitability and sustainability.

Working closely with the President/CEO and other members of the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President is responsible for ensuring that the division has the required personnel, and the financial resources required for business success. The Vice President, Water and Wastewater Engineering and Operations serves as the division’s chief spokesperson and representative to the public, and as the primary role model for employees. Structural Engineer (multiple positions)

Flexospan Steel Buildings, Inc., a leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial metal roofing and siding, custom engineered metal buildings and self-storage facilities for 50 years, based out of Sandy Lake, PA, is seeking structural engineers with different levels of experience.

This position involves challenging projects in a fast-paced environment.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Assisting Professional Engineer, Project Managers and sales staff as needed on sizing components, design calculations, determining snow/wind loads, foundation requirements, etc.
  • Assisting Professional Engineer in analysis and design of industrial and commercial metal buildings, including overhead cranes and mezzanines.
  • Assisting contractors and customers with requirements and questions on all phases of project, including field visits when needed.
  • Assisting in engineering research, project design, erection drawings and details from customer supplied drawings using industry software and AutoCAD.
  • Generating shop drawings and bills of materials from the erection drawings.
  • Using specialized design and detailing software to aid in the design and detailing of steel construction, assisting in quoting process, production, etc.
  • Ability to read blueprints and do material takeoffs required.
  • Communicating with customers and erectors
  • Knowledge of steel design, details, AISC, IBC (and other codes) will be a plus.
  • Successful applicant must be:
  • A willing person that thinks outside of the box and able to work on a project from start to finish with minimal supervision.
  • Computer proficient
  • Eager to learn existing and new engineering software as needed

Job Description

This is a technical / professional position providing direct assistance to local government and non-profit agencies in implementing various nontraditional, federally funded transportation projects in the Delaware Valley region. 

The incumbent will coordinate and facilitate the implementation process (beginning at project concept through construction) of numerous projects that are sponsored by a local government, other public agency, or by a private non-profit organization, in addition to program management work. The types of projects include: bicycle facility construction (both on and off roadway); reconstruction/restoration of historic transportation buildings; provision of pedestrian facilities through sidewalk and ADA ramp improvements; and other such projects eligible under federal funding programs. The federal funding sources are generally Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TA Set-aside), Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) and Surface Transportation Program (STP/STU).

PennDOT has asked DVRPC to coordinate and facilitate the implementation of these non-traditional projects, in which the project sponsor is responsible for hiring and managing professional engineers/architects to develop the plans, specifications, and estimates for the project and for submitting these through PennDOT for approval.

The incumbent will coordinate and facilitate this work with the project sponsor in the same manner as PennDOT’s managers for the pre-construction phases of the project. PennDOT will let the construction contracts and the sponsor will provide for construction inspection. The work of the incumbent will be performed in accordance with overall DVRPC policies, federal and state requirements, and professional standards. Work will be reviewed by senior level managers through regular project status meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate meetings and field views with project sponsor, PennDOT and affected municipalities and counties.
  • Assist the project sponsor in the process of getting a consultant under contract, including providing guidance on the preparation of the request for qualifications (RFQ), how to advertise and solicit responses, and the requirements of the state/federal consultant selection process.
  • Assist the project sponsor in the reviews of consultants’ responses to the RFP, including the scope and cost proposals, project schedule, and list of deliverables.
  • Oversee the project’s environmental review process and the development of environmental documents.
  • Pursue, with the project sponsor and the consultant, the timely delivery of final plans, specifications and estimates to PennDOT.
  • Write letters, meeting minutes and give status reports to technical committees.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of how transportation projects are implemented preferred.
  • Experience related to project development and management preferred.
  • Knowledge of the applicable state and federal standards preferred.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Strong oral, writing, organization, and presentation skills to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private agency officials, consultants, the general public, and other DVRPC staff.
  • Ability to travel and attend meetings at various locations throughout the DVRPC region approximately 25% of the time.

Experience & Training

To classify as a level TE I, a minimum of one year of professional experience in Civil or Transportation Engineering or Project Management including demonstrated skills in design, construction management/inspection, or a related field, and a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Civil Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
