PSPE Webinar | Thorn Run Interchange Improvements
Description | Karen Mueser, PE with TranSystems, formerly known as L.R.Kimball, will present information pertaining to the Thorn Run Interchange Improvements, which received the Beaver County Chapter of PSPE Project of the Year in 2021.
This project improved traffic and pedestrian mobility at a major interchange near the Air Force 911th Airlift Wing unit at the Pittsburgh International Airport to alleviate significant traffic safety issues and congestion.
The project tackled an obsolete layout that relied on stop signs to manage multiple lanes of traffic. The layout created unsafe traffic conditions, increased congestion, and no pedestrian access. The issues were projected to degrade further due to increased population and future development. The project brought new electrical service for new traffic signals and lighting, a new on-ramp, full-depth roadway reconstruction, ADA-compliant pedestrian access, and efficient interchange lighting designed by Santangelo and Lindsay, Inc.
Karen has a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 and has 19 years of experience. She served as the Project Manager during construction of the project.
