PSPE Valley Forge Chapter | East Penn Manufacturing Tour
East Penn Manufacturing | Plant Tour & Technical Presentation
Founded in 1946 by WWII veteran DeLight Breidegam Jr. and his father in a small Pennsylvania creamery, East Penn Manufacturing began as a modest operation rebuilding batteries amidst post-war material shortages. The company’s flagship brand, Deka, was born just a year later through a partnership with engineer Karl Gasche—its name a creative portmanteau of “DeLight” and “Karl.” Over the decades, the business transitioned from a local rebuilder to a global powerhouse, remaining a family-owned entity that now operates one of the world’s largest single-site battery manufacturing complexes in Lyons Station, PA. Today, the Deka brand is synonymous with diverse energy storage solutions, ranging from automotive and marine batteries to massive industrial power systems, all while maintaining a pioneering focus on closed-loop recycling and environmental sustainability.
