What is MATHCOUNTS?

MATHCOUNTS is a non-profit, nationwide, middle school, math program founded by the CNA Foundation, National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  National sponsors include the ADC Foundation, General Motors Foundation, Lockheed Martin, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Northrop Grumman Foundation, Raytheon Company, Shell Oil Company, Texas Instruments Incorporated, 3M Foundation, and Xerox Corporation.

MATHCOUNTS is the only national enrichment, coaching, and competition program designed to answer the problem of declining math skills among U.S. students and to promote math as an exciting, challenging, and absorbing experience that leads to rewarding career opportunities in science, technology and engineering in middle schools (6th, 7th, and 8th grades).

MATHCOUNTS emphasizes teamwork and practical problem solving - a familiar approach for engineering projects.  The competition comes in four stages.  Students compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches on math subjects including algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, linear algebra, and polynomials.  Students first compete within in their schools then move on to the Local Chapter Level Competition.  The winners of the Local Chapters move on to represent their region to compete on the State Level.  And finally, the winning students will move on to the National Level to represent their home State.  More than 7,000 schools, 350,000 students and 17,000 volunteers participate nationally every year.

Strong math skills are necessary for a dramatically expanding number of careers.  MATHCOUNTS is working to keep career choices wide open for students.

Please help us and MATHCOUNTS increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievements in mathematics in middle schools throughout the United States
starting right here in our own City of Philadelphia.

Having a strong mathematics background now will benefit our engineers of the future!!!
