The PSPE Bridge Building Competition is an exciting way for high school
students to showcase their engineering talent. Held annually, in March,
the competition is open to all students, but only grades 9 thru 12
are prize eligible. All bridges are made with the same material, which
is supplied to the students, and the bridge must conform to certain
criteria in order to qualify for testing. Prizes are distributed to
the top three bridges which show the highest structural efficiency,
meaning the bridge that carries the biggest load with regard to its
own weight. Contact a chapter officer for additional information.

Edward L. Rogers laid the groundwork for the formation of Lincoln Chapter in early 1946, while he was Chairman of the Susquehanna Section of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. Due to the considerable interest of ASME members in the new professional engineering law, Rogers invited Leroy
F. Christman, President of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, to address ASME members and their guests, at their April 29th, 1946 meeting
held at the Stevens House in Lancaster. Christman's subject: Pennsylvania's New Professional Engineering Law
So much interest was generated at this meeting, among both registered and unregistered engineers, that the time seemed ripe for the formation of
a local PSPE Chapter. Some registrants in the area had already joined existing PSPE Chapters in Harrisburg and Reading. Within the next few
weeks an invitation was sent out by the PSPE office in Harrisburg to all registered engineers of record in the Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster
County area to attend a dinner meeting May 27th, 1946 at the West York Inn, for the express purpose of forming a new PSPE Chapter.
Speakers at this meeting were: Richie Lawrie, Jr., President of the National Society of Professional Engineers; Leroy F. Christman, President of the Pennsylvania
Society of Professional Engineers; and Guy R. Johnson, President of the Harrisburg Chapter PSPE. At the close of the meeting, about thirty engineers
in the area signed up as future members of a new four-county Chapter.
The next month this new group met at the Brunswick Hotel in Lancaster, with Leroy Christman presiding. Officers were elected as follows: Thomas A.
Monk, President; Henry C. Kern, Vice-President; Robert S. Mayo, Treasurer; Kenneth E. Rockhold, Secretarty; and Eugene Fickes, Jacob Mueller, James
Towers, Henry Huth, J. h. Shertzer, and Joseph Michaels as Directors; Frank Shaw, State Director.
July 28th, 1946 the First Board of Directors Meeting was held at the cottage of Bob Mayo in the Long Level area. Working Committees were named for
the coming year. Two names were proposed for the Chapter—"South Penn" and "Lincoln", the latter due to the fact that the
historic Lincoln Highway passed through all four of the counties to be served by the new Chapter.
At the regular meeting, held September 24, 1946, the membership voted 14 to 13 to use the name "Lincoln Chapter". The membership also
voted to close the Charter as of October 1, 1946. A By-Laws Committee, headed by Frank Shaw, was also selected, which subsequently prepared and
distributed the First Chapter By-Laws, as of November 27, 1946.

MATHCOUNTS was started in 1983 to promote math excellence among middle school
students. It is one of the largest and most successful education partnerships,
involving over 500,000 students and 17,000 teachers, engineers and other
professional volunteers each year.
The Program’s Mission is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance
achievement in middle school mathematics. Reaching all students, not just
select winners is the true intent of the program.
Why MATHCOUNTS Works
• MATHCOUNTS motivates and rewards students by
fostering teamwork and a competitive spirit.
• MATHCOUNTS is more than a competition. It involves students and
teachers in year-long coaching sessions and helps students at all levels
improve their problem-solving skills.
• MATHCOUNTS builds math skills, promotes logical thinking and
sharpens students' analytical abilities.
• MATHCOUNTS provides America's middle school teachers with
creative, state-of-the-art curriculum materials, free of charge.
• MATHCOUNTS introduces students to math-related careers through
contacts with engineers and other professionals who serve as volunteers.
• MATHCOUNTS is educator-driven. Materials and activities are
structured to meet student needs, as identified by educators. Members of the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) develop these materials in
accordance with NCTM curriculum standards.
MATHCOUNTS is organized and administered by the MATHCOUNTS
Foundation and NSPE. Pennsylvania leads the country in number of schools and
students participating.

We've reached the end of another year of Lincoln Chapter activities. It's been a great year! I think we accomplished a lot of good things. I cannot say enough good things about the efforts of the board and officers in this chapter. Please take a moment to thank them for their service to the Lincoln Chapter, PSPE and the engineering community in general. The work of each individual is the glue that holds the structure of our profession, the standards of our industry and the integrity of our certifications in place.
You have a couple of chances left to get together with your Lincoln Chapter colleagues before the summer break in this month. We look forward to an insightful tour of Safe Harbor Dam, Powerhouse, and Fish Lift Station on May 4th worth 2 PDHs and then our traditional end of year get together with a picnic and baseball game at Sovereign Bank Stadium with the York Revolution on May 19th.
Since this is my final President's Message, I wanted to express my thanks to the Lincoln Chapter Board for their efforts. John has been patient and accommodating with my input on the web site. Mike P. graciously accepted the responsibilities of the Treasurer so Ken could accept the President Elect nomination. A special thanks to Ken who carried on many of the presidential duties that I was unable to be present for, and to Susan who has been an essential advisor on an endless list of questions that I had this year.
Have a great summer!
Keith A. Miller, PE
