The PSPE Bridge Building Competition is an exciting way for high school
students to showcase their engineering talent. Held annually, in February,
the competition is open to all students, but only grades 9 thru 12
are prize eligible. All bridges are made with the same material, which
is supplied to the students, and the bridge must conform to certain
criteria in order to qualify for testing. Prizes are distributed to
the top three bridges which show the highest structural efficiency,
meaning the bridge that carries the biggest load with regard to its
own weight. Contact a chapter officer for additional information.

Edward L. Rogers laid the groundwork for the formation of Lincoln Chapter in early 1946, while he was Chairman of the Susquehanna Section of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. Due to the considerable interest of ASME members in the new professional engineering law, Rogers invited Leroy
F. Christman, President of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, to address ASME members and their guests, at their April 29th, 1946 meeting
held at the Stevens House in Lancaster. Christman's subject: Pennsylvania's New Professional Engineering Law
So much interest was generated at this meeting, among both registered and unregistered engineers, that the time seemed ripe for the formation of
a local PSPE Chapter. Some registrants in the area had already joined existing PSPE Chapters in Harrisburg and Reading. Within the next few
weeks an invitation was sent out by the PSPE office in Harrisburg to all registered engineers of record in the Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster
County area to attend a dinner meeting May 27th, 1946 at the West York Inn, for the express purpose of forming a new PSPE Chapter.
Speakers at this meeting were: Richie Lawrie, Jr., President of the National Society of Professional Engineers; Leroy F. Christman, President of the Pennsylvania
Society of Professional Engineers; and Guy R. Johnson, President of the Harrisburg Chapter PSPE. At the close of the meeting, about thirty engineers
in the area signed up as future members of a new four-county Chapter.
The next month this new group met at the Brunswick Hotel in Lancaster, with Leroy Christman presiding. Officers were elected as follows: Thomas A.
Monk, President; Henry C. Kern, Vice-President; Robert S. Mayo, Treasurer; Kenneth E. Rockhold, Secretarty; and Eugene Fickes, Jacob Mueller, James
Towers, Henry Huth, J. h. Shertzer, and Joseph Michaels as Directors; Frank Shaw, State Director.
July 28th, 1946 the First Board of Directors Meeting was held at the cottage of Bob Mayo in the Long Level area. Working Committees were named for
the coming year. Two names were proposed for the Chapter—"South Penn" and "Lincoln", the latter due to the fact that the
historic Lincoln Highway passed through all four of the counties to be served by the new Chapter.
At the regular meeting, held September 24, 1946, the membership voted 14 to 13 to use the name "Lincoln Chapter". The membership also
voted to close the Charter as of October 1, 1946. A By-Laws Committee, headed by Frank Shaw, was also selected, which subsequently prepared and
distributed the First Chapter By-Laws, as of November 27, 1946.

Welcome to the 2009-2010 MATHCOUNTS season!
Please take note of these important dates:
February 27, 2010 - Regional Competition at Millersville University
March 26-27, 2010 - Pennsylvania State Competition in Harrisburg
May 6-9, 2010 - Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, FL
If you have other questions, please call or e-mail Susan K Sprague, PE at ssprague@jmt.com 717-741-6222
MATHCOUNTS was started in 1983 to promote math excellence among middle school
students. It is one of the largest and most successful education partnerships,
involving over 500,000 students and 17,000 teachers, engineers and other
professional volunteers each year.
The Program’s Mission is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance
achievement in middle school mathematics. Reaching all students, not just
select winners is the true intent of the program.
Why MATHCOUNTS Works
• MATHCOUNTS motivates and rewards students by
fostering teamwork and a competitive spirit.
• MATHCOUNTS is more than a competition. It involves students and
teachers in year-long coaching sessions and helps students at all levels
improve their problem-solving skills.
• MATHCOUNTS builds math skills, promotes logical thinking and
sharpens students' analytical abilities.
• MATHCOUNTS provides America's middle school teachers with
creative, state-of-the-art curriculum materials, free of charge.
• MATHCOUNTS introduces students to math-related careers through
contacts with engineers and other professionals who serve as volunteers.
• MATHCOUNTS is educator-driven. Materials and activities are
structured to meet student needs, as identified by educators. Members of the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) develop these materials in
accordance with NCTM curriculum standards.
MATHCOUNTS is organized and administered by the MATHCOUNTS
Foundation and NSPE. Pennsylvania leads the country in number of schools and
students participating.
For more information, see the website www.mathcounts.org.
MATHCOUNTS is a nonprofit organization

It is hard to believe our last scheduled event is less than a month away symbolizing the end of our Chapter year and my Presidency. As I look back over the last four years as a member of the Lincoln Chapter Board, I am amazed at the commitment from several individuals and numerous volunteers that make our Chapter great. Year after year, we are faced with finding individuals to assist on the board, increase event attendance and membership, volunteers for our numerous events, and continue the work started by our previous members. This year is not any different. We currently have a few open positions on the Board that need to be filled to keep our organization moving forward and relieve the strain on the long standing volunteers. In short, we need you to take an active role in your Chapter. As a father of three young children, I understand the reluctance and difficulties of donating additional personal time from our already busy schedules. However, the Engineer in me, like you, tends to accept the challenges faced to make things better. As I have said before, Engineers make a difference and improve the world. Let us continue to do that in the Chapter by assisting our new president Keith Miller, PE. Please contact Keith, kmiller@nittanyengineering.com, to see what you can do to assist him in the coming year.
We have a few final events before summer officially kicks off. PSPE Board of Directors meeting will be held on Saturday, May 22 at the Radisson Hotel in King of Prussia. On Monday, May 24, PSPE will hold Engineer's Legislative Affairs Day in Harrisburg with the opportunity to review the release of the Pennsylvania infrastructure report card. After a hard day at Harrisburg, follow up on Tuesday, May 25 by bringing the family out for an evening at the Barnstormers game.
Thanks to all that have assisted this year and continue to make our Chapter successful. I hope everyone enjoys their summer and I look forward to seeing you again.
David J. Atkins, PE
Lincoln Chapter President '09-'10

74th Annual PSPE Conference
As expected, the Lincoln and Harrisburg Chapters hosted a very successful State Conference in Gettysburg this past June. It was well attended and the entire conference was a high quality event, well worth the monetary cost needed to attend. Educational sessions such as "Pennsylvania Engineer's Licensing Codes, Regulations and Violations" presented by Robert C. Grubic, P.E. of HRG, "Infrastructure Challenges and Improvements for the Pennsylvania Turnpike" presented by Gary L. Graham the Assistant Chief Engineer from the PA Turnpike, and "Engineers in the Civil War" presented by Gustav Person the Installation Historian from Ft. Belvoir, were not only interesting but we also received 6.5 PDH's for the entire day! In addition to the education sessions, Abe Lincoln was a historic hit at the Friday night dinner and Governor Richard Thornburgh and his wife, Ginny, were no less than charming and witty at the 74th Annual PSPE Installation and Awards Banquet.
If you missed this year's conference, make a point to consider attending next's year's event which is currently being planned to be held with the NSPE Northeast meeting for the Fall of 2009.
