Forensic Mechanical Engineer

Job Location:  Penns Park, PA

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer, preferably with forensic experience, to work with clients in the insurance and legal industries to investigate and analyze a variety of mechanical system failures. Projects involve industrial machinery, consumer products, HVAC equipment, workplace safety, construction equipment, as well as general safety issues.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations to gather and analyze equipment failures;
  • Conducts engineering analysis and evaluation related to human protection and safety issues;
  • Conducts safety, codes and failure analyses for plumbing & HVAC issues;
  • Conducts failure analyses of residential, commercial, and industrial appliances and equipment involving property damage and personal injury;
  • Designs, fabricates, investigates, and evaluates various mechanical systems;
  • Conducts static and dynamic tests of automobile, marine, aviation, industrial, commercial, residential and recreation equipment;
  • Designs mechanical and electronic data measuring systems for use in both static and dynamic tests;
  • Evaluates human protection systems for functionality and performance with emphasis on human interaction with the system;
  • Performs accident reconstruction and mechanical investigation and analyses of vehicle collisions and mishaps;
  • Conducts investigations and analyses of motorcycle mishaps, including mechanical failures and defects as well as accident reconstruction;
  • Prepare and deliver technical/educational presentations to existing and potential client groups and technical conferences;
  • Enhance professional/technical knowledge and credibility through continuing education programs, review of technical publications and the preparation of technical papers;
  • Prepare technical reports;
  • Provide expert testimony as required.

Qualifications

  • Masters in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelors considered.
  • PE licensure in one or more states, preferred.
  • The expert candidate will possess the willingness to work in the litigation setting and will be given the opportunity to evaluate cases and claims, design and build test fixtures and to evaluate and test hardware.
  • Prior testifying experience is preferred but not required; however, the expert candidate must possess solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • A background in safety equipment is helpful with knowledge in any of the following areas including but not limited to machine guarding, operation of equipment, consumer products, workplace safety, ladders, scaffolding, machinery, construction equipment and general safety issues.

Project Implementation Engineer

This is a technical / professional position providing direct assistance to local government and non-profit agencies in implementing various non-traditional, federally funded transportation projects in the Delaware Valley region.

The incumbent will coordinate and facilitate the implementation process (beginning at project concept through construction) of numerous projects that are sponsored by a local government, other public agency, or by a private non-profit organization, in addition to program management work. The types of projects include: bicycle facility construction (both on and off roadway); reconstruction/restoration of historic transportation buildings; provision of pedestrian facilities and streetscape improvements; and other such projects eligible under federal funding programs. The federal funding sources are generally Transportation Alternatives (TA), Congestion Mitigation/Air Quality (CMAQ) and Surface Transportation Program (STP/STU).

PennDOT has asked DVRPC to coordinate and facilitate the implementation of these non-traditional projects. DVRPC also provides project management support for the four Counties in New Jersey. In either case, the project sponsor is responsible for hiring and managing professional engineers/architects to develop the plans, specifications, and estimates for the project and for submitting these through PennDOT/NJDOT for approval.

The incumbent will coordinate and facilitate this work with the project sponsor in the same manner as PennDOT’s/NJDOT’s managers for the pre-construction phases of the project. PennDOT/NJDOT will let the construction contracts and the sponsor will provide for construction inspection.

Experience & Training
To classify as a level TE I/II, a minimum of one to three years of professional experience in Civil or Transportation Engineering or Project Management including demonstrated skills in design, construction management/inspection, or a related field, and a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Civil Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

The selected candidate will be part of a project team and will interface with program managers, U.S. Navy engineers, and equipment manufacturers.
